Description

Mr Ruwan Fernando, Consultant Obstetrician, Urogynaecologist, and Gynaecologist, is currently working within St Marys Hospital in the Imperial College NHS Trust. He is highly experienced in all aspects of child-birth, gynaecology, and bladder issues, with a special focus on pelvic floor damage after childbirth.Mr Fernando began his medical degree in Sri Lanka, where he qualified in 1990 from the University of Colombo. At the same university he undertook his postgraduate training, which he completed within 3 years, he also gained a Masters degree there. Following this, he moved to the UK, where he received specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology in several UK hospitals including Southend Hospital, University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Leeds General Infirmary, and Mayday University Hospital. He went on to do a further 2 years of training focusing on complex bladder, bowel and pelvic floor dysfunction.Mr Fernando is a very active researcher focusing on pelvic floor damage during childbirth, he was awarded an MD for his work in this subject by the University of Keele. His research has resulted in the publication of over 75 peer-reviewed articles, and he has been invited to speak at conferences around the world on Pelvic floor dysfunction following childbirth, Urinary Incontinence, and Pelvic organ Prolapse. His research work has been recognised by the Royal College of Gynaecologists who awarded him the Harold Malkin Prize in 2006.Mr Fernando is also an excellent educator, holding the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Imperial College London. He partakes in workshops around the country and abroad showing fellow doctors and nurses how to treat and identify perineal tears after childbirth. He is a member of several prestigious associations including the RCOG Guidelines Committee, the Ethics Committee of the International Continence Society, and International Consultation on Incontinence.
