Mr Raymond Liow was educated in Oundle School in Peterborough. He graduated with a medical degree from Charing Cross Medical School, University of London in 1991. Specialist training in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery ensued in the Northern Rotation in Newcastle form 1996 t0 2002. During that time, he undertook specialist orthopaedic training with a Fellowship in Shoulder and Sports Orthopaedics in Edinburgh. His experience in shoulder surgery was further enhanced through a Travelling Fellowship to Canada and the USA in 2002, where he had the privilege of working with leading sports orthopaedic surgeons at University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, USA and the University of Toronto, Canada. He was greatly influenced by this experience and many of the practices that he observed have been incorporated subsequently into his practice. Raymond has nearly 20 years experience as a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, initially at Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, and James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. In 2016, he moved to North Tees and Hartlepool Hospitals where he now works in a thriving Upper Limb unit. He strongly believes that a modern shoulder surgical service should provide proven contemporary surgical techniques but with the support of a robust multidisciplinary team. Raymond Liow treats shoulder conditions such as frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, rotator cuff disorders and arthritic conditions of the joints around the shoulder. He believes that many of the shoulder conditions can be successfully treated with modern but well-proven arthrosopic (keyhole) techniques. Prosthetic replacements of arthritic or worn-out joints are also offered where appropriate. Raymond has a particular interest in shoulder instability (dislocations) and sports related injuries and relishes the challenge of treating complex shoulder instability in high demand patients. These include sportspersons, both amateurs and professionals alike. He has also had the experience of treating high demand military personnel. He is committed to providing high quality service and he strongly believes in reflecting and review of his outcomes with audit and research. Nearly every aspect of his surgical practice has been reviewed. Results of rotator cuff repairs, acromioclavicular excisions, frozen shoulder surgery, shoulder instability surgery, proximal humeral fracture surgery and shoulder replacements have been presented in national meetings and international forums. He also publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals
