"He is one of the only surgeons offering 'biological knee replacements' - using multiple soft-tissue grafts to reconstruct the joint rather than inserting an artificial one". Mr McDermott has extensive experience in lower limb joint surgery. He was the first surgeon in the UK to perform the new Conformis G2 i-Uni custom-made partial knee replacement. He was also the first surgeon in Greater London to implant the Symbios custom-made hip replacement with 3D computerised pre-operative planning. He is the Honorary Secretary of the UK Meniscal Study Group as well as a member of the European Meniscal Transplantation Study Group. In 2003 Mr McDermott was awarded the President's Medal of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) for his research into meniscal repair. Then in 2004 he was awarded a master of surgery higher degree by Imperial College, London, for his research into meniscal transplantation. He was the youngest ever surgeon to be elected onto the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons.
