David Shewring set up the Hand Surgery service in Cardiff in 1994 and has developed this over the last two decades. He was President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand for 2018. This is the national body for Hand Surgery in the UK, based at the Royal College of Surgeons in London, with a membership of 800 Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgeons. He was also Chairman of the Committee of Management of the Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume), which is the foremost publication on Hand Surgery in the world. He is a Council member of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH) and is Chairman of the the FESSH Training & Education Committee for Hand Surgery in Europe. He was the organiser of the triennial congress of the International Federation of Societies of Surgery of the Hand, which was held for the first time in the UK, in London, in 2022, attracting 4000 delegates.
