I’m an innovator with over 30 years experience in the field of sleep medicine. Happily, I’m not a medical doctor, dentist or pharmacist. They’ve a tough job that I would not want! You might notice, I don’t describe myself as a “sleep expert”, as I consider that title often misused. A “sleep expert” IMHO is a qualified somnologist or sleep physiologist and upwards. I have a passion for Making Sleep Accessible®️ and improving patient outcomes in primary care. I choose to focus on community pharmacy as I consider this the ‘coalface’ of healthcare; where the first opportunity for a conversation with a healthcare professional exists. This conversation needs to be informed. So far in my career, I have worked in small (just me!), corporate and 3rd sector organisations. I've kicked off and led two professional societies, taught dentists and pharmacists and anyone else who will listen 😆. While previously sleep apnoea focused, since 2012 my interest has become wider - yet in some ways narrower: How to Make Sleep Accessible? Both a play on insomnia and more practically how to deliver access to evidence-based sleep advice and services? So, I've begun a PhD in Public Health at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. As CEO and Founder of the British Society of Pharmacy Sleep Services (BSPSS), a registered charity, I have the honour to lead a team of expert sleep and pharmacy trustees. The BSPSS provides evidence-based sleep education and support to pharmacy, and in turn their patients; meeting people where they are. We currently provide online CPD in partnership with the Chemist and Druggist and on our own website. We also provide face-2-face and virtual education at leading University, pharmacy schools. To keep me busy, I’m also CIO of the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (EADSM), a taskforce member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Sleep, and an advisor/consultant in this sector. And I’m the creator of Snorer Pharmacy®, a Pay-As-You-Go online software tool that helps community pharmacists grow their business by helping “snorers” (signposting by triage). My mission is simply to help people sleep better and live healthier, safer, well-rested and I hope therefore happier lives.
