My name is Ella, I am an independent Spinal Cord Injury Occupational Therapist, and have over 12 years experience as an OT, six of those have been as an SCI Case Manager. I have worked in two of the northern spinal cord injury centres in England, and worked with individuals on personal and domestic activities of daily living however I also specialised in assessing and splinting the upper limb as well as hand therapy. Work outside the centre included accessing community resources and sport. I also worked with designers and community services to adapt homes, schools, colleges and work place environments to make places more wheelchair accessible. My work as a Case Manager involved carrying out access assessments and sourcing and assessing very specialised pieces of equipment. As well as arranging bespoke treatment packages for people with varying levels of ability after life changing injuries. I supported the work of the NHS wherever appropriate and possible, and I often carried out informal education sessions with Solicitors and Claims Handlers to give them insight into the difficulties faced by people with SCI and their families. As my private workload grew, I worked to set up a company offering OT to those affected by SCI; Evolve Spinal Specialists. Although specialist, the work is very varied, looking at therapy, adaptations and equipment; and is structured around the individual and their needs. I always work closely with the Case Manager as I understand how important this is.
