I am currently Team Lead for the Acute Medical Team at Milton Keynes Hospital, a role I have had since the end of 2011. I assess and treat patients across several acute medical wards, dealing with patients with a variety of medical and social problems, and elderly patients with age-related and/or mental health issues. In addition to assessment and treatment I am responsible, together with Physiotherapy colleagues, for identifying patients suitable for transfer to rehabilitation facilities, and for referral on to community-based therapy services on discharge from hospital. Although our department is no longer responsible for covering the Accident & Emergency Department at Milton Keynes Hospital, in the past I have been involved in assessing patients there during staff shortages. I am used to an environment where there is a high number of referrals, rapid patient turnover and pressure to adhere to timescales, requiring effective prioritisation and appropriate delegation of workload within the team. I have to work effectively with a variety of other Multidisciplinary professionals in addition to working closely with patients and their families. During my time at Milton Keynes I have forged effective working relations with a number of different disciplines, agencies and services. In addition to patient contact, I am responsible for appraisal and supervision of both Band 6 and Band 5 Occupational Therapists and a Band 4 Occupational Therapy Technical Instructor. I have also been responsible for Occupational Therapy student placements and provided informal education about the Occupational Therapy service to students of other disciplines. I have assisted in service development by formulating new documentation used in the Occupational Therapy department, including assessment forms and discharge summaries. Outside work I have contributed to the Woking FC matchday programme, and spent one season as overall editor.
