Description

I have worked in multiple areas as a Senior Occupational Therapist (OT) in East Sussex. I have rotated in the Stroke Setting, covering Acute Stroke, Intermediate Care for Stroke and Community Stroke Rehabilitation. I have then spent a few months working with the Urgent Community Response Team (UCR), Adult Social Care (ASC), The Department of Work and Pension (DWP) and Accident and Emergencies (A+E). Roles and responsibilities: During my experience as a senior OT, I have managed a caseload of patients holistically with a variety of conditions and needs. I was able to formulate and deliver a generic and specialised treatment based on their specific needs, using evidence based practice and clinical reasoning skills. I supported members of staff across all bands and took part in supporting undergraduate students within OT and the wider professional areas. I have attended daily ward rounds to identify appropriate patients for discharge. This has enabled me to complete many assessments to recognise needs of the patient and facilitate a safe discharge using the correct pathway, while providing a timely and seamless discharge. I have worked within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patients and their families are at the centre of the decision making. This has included liaising with community services such as community rehabilitation, district nurses, reablement team and social services. I am also able to screen for patients appropriate for further investigations while still in hospital, which has prevented hospital readmissions in the future. Professional skills: Throughout my OT career, I have adopted and demonstrated a flexible work pattern to ensure where possible shifts are covered. I have a good understanding of when to refer to other professionals when cases are not within the scope of my practice, and I am open to learning and developing my practice to ensure service delivery. I am a good team player and have had opportunities to lead the team to ensure timely service provision. I have good communication skills which have created positive professional relationships with every team I worked with. I am keen for personal development and I have participated in service improvement within each team I worked with. I am in the process of completing a leadership training in November which may be the first step in helping me transition from a senior level to managerial level. I have been proactive in Manual Handling training to further develop my skills in this area and keep up to date with new techniques in handling patients safely.
