Description

Since taking slightly early retirement in 2018 I have been actively seeking out the opportunities assured for retired OTs in a chance conversation with the, then, CEO of the College of Occupational Therapists. She was right, there are ventures out there...... but it has taken super sleuth skills to track them down. I have a 32 year career in Occupational Therapy behind me, hallmarked by starting new services. So, it struck me, could I look at retirement in the same way? Carrying on in any professional sense is not everyone's idea of retirement, but I have found it hugely enjoyable to use my skills and experience in different ways. From supervising undergraduate OTs on role emerging placements, acting as a patient for simulated placements, writing for OT publications and creating a network (Facebook group) for retired and soon to retire OTs and OT support workers. My mission, it seems, is to challenge the notion that one day you are at the top of your game, sent on your way in a blaze of glory, with grateful thanks for years of service. The next day you are seen as a has been, characterised by the many cartoon based books for retirees, wearing slippers all day, opening wine at 5pm and having to buy your own stationary. I hear great things about the police and even farmers, who are embracing the wisdom of their retired workforce and am striving for retired OTs to be seen as an asset not to be let go of too soon.
