Description

Currently a MSc Occupational Therapy student at York St John University, I have previously gained a wealth of experience in various healthcare settings. Most recently, as a Technical Instructor within an Occupational Therapy Department at a Medium Secure Psychiatric Hospital. Through this I facilitated horticulture sessions, a ukulele course and cooking skills sessions. I have also engaged in a variety of voluntary roles, such as leading a singing group for the Alzhiemer's Society and admin work for Jessie's Fund, a music therapy charity based in York. Through these various roles I have developed further key skills needed in the healthcare sector, primarily organisation, communication and a professional caring attitude to all. I have currently completed two Occupational Therapy placements as part of my course. The first took place at York District Hospital on the Vascular Surgery Ward. I worked with patients with a variety of conditions & challenges. I gained experience completing initial assessments, mobility & transfer assessments and discharge planning. I was able to expand on my communication skills through working with the MDT and through working with family to include them in the discharge planning process. My most valuable experience during this placement was the work I did with amputee patients. This involved the OT & rehab process, providing support and guidance on adjusting to their amputation and co- facilitating the Amputee Rehab Classes. I also worked on a project to create new material for an induction pack, which included an Amputee Rehab Handbook, a SOAP notes guide and a Surgical Glossary. The second took place on a low secure forensic rehab ward at Clifton House. At Clifton House I had the opportunity to apply the skills I had learnt during the occupational therapy course in the forensic setting. As I have extensive prior experience in this setting I was able to integrate into the ward and team quickly and was able to focus on utilising my skills and developing my learning. In this placement I facilitated a variety of interventions; such as cooking skills sessions, community assessments and ward music groups. I was able to engage in patient assessments, such as the OCAIRS and ABAS-II, and patient meetings, such as Care Programme Approach meetings and Multi-discplinary meetings. Through this placement I worked on my communication skills with other professionals and rapport-building skills with patients and ward staff.
