Experience of teaching in further education. Teaching aromatherapy, Indian head massage and nutrition, also life skills. Special interest in human rights and Gypsies and Travellers. Experience working with asylum seekers for a number of years where I met some incredibly brave people. I completed the MSc in Occupational Therapy which led to an interest in pain management after completing a role emerging placement with the community pain team. I have recently worked in the area of pain management and also mental health facilitating a number of peer led recovery groups which explore useful strategies focusing on recovery and wellbeing. I am particularly interested in holistic occupational therapy. In the area of pain management I worked with people who have persistent pain, initially assessing, planning treatments, faciliating groups and 1:1 work using a number of strategies. Persistent pain or chronic pain is any pain that has lasted beyond the normal healing period and is not responsive to usual methods of treatment. I worked using a bio-psychosocial approach. Facilitating pain management programmes with the aim of reducing stress and tension, using relaxation and mindfulness, working together to set reasonable goals and making step by step plans to work through, simple regular exercise programmes to suit the individual, pacing and energy saving techniques to balance activity throughout the day and examining the quality of sleep a person gets while exploring strategies to improve sleep. Pain prevents people from getting a good nights sleep which in turn exacerbates the pain. I am currently working with an assertive outreach team where I receive referrals from care coordinators. I use standardised and non-standardised assessments, plan treatments, work 1:1 and co-facilitate a number of groups.
