Description

CAREER I am currently working as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, since Sep 2001. I also participate in the spinal rota involving acute and complex spinal referrals from around the region. My major interests in spinal surgery include deformity surgery, surgery for spinal tumours and trauma and surgery for pathology in lumbar spine. I am the Lead for the Fellowship programme in Spinal Surgery in Leeds. Currently, I supervise appointments of three Senior fellowship candidates each year and undertake Educational supervision and monitoring of their portfolio. I have secured Royal College approval for these fellowships. I also act as Lead for the Yorkshire Deanery in the appointment of National Spine Fellow each year. In the role of Clinical Director for Major Trauma Designation, between 2011 and 2014, I helped deliver a successful Business Case for the Major Trauma Centre at Leeds. As the leader, I have set up Sub Regional trauma unit network as well as form an effective internal clinical governance within Leeds. As the Academic Programme Director for the Orthopaedic Registrar training in West Yorkshire and Humberside (2009-2014), I was responsible for the educational needs and preparation of 65 registrars in T&O. I am also actively involved in teaching and training of the registrars who are approaching their exit exam (FRCS Orth). I organise their mock exam tutorials on a weekly basis. I have been Clinical Lead for Spinal Surgery since September 2009 and have helped deliver the ASSR project within the West Yorkshire (reconfiguration of referral pathways for elective surgery and setting up of acute pathways for emergency care). I have developed Patient information booklets for various types of spinal disorders and surgical procedures. 6. I have been an active part of the team that has received an LTHT NHS award for setting and delivering new service of Vertebroplasty treatment in the trust. I am actively involved in spinal implant tender and have taken the lead in this. 7. I was actively involved in ‘Surgeon development’ and setting up of the spinal unit in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This was a project undertaken from Leeds over 4-5 years and frequent visits to Bangladesh, in addition to arranging fellowship programmes for surgeons from Dhaka. 8. I have set up a ‘Trust charitable Account’’ which is used to fund any Course or Conference expenditure (for Spinal Fellows, Registrars, Nurse Specialists, Medical students) related to teaching and training. This fund has been recently used to help set a new Body surface scanner for scoliosis patients. My main area of expertise and interest are: 1. complex spinal surgery, 2. Scoliosis surgery 3. Minimally invasive spinal surgery. I am recognised for my leadership qualities and for my friendly outlook. I relax out of hours by running and playing on-line chess. I am also an enthusiast for animal charities, specifically Donkey sanctuary for which I raise money each year by running in Leeds Half Marathon
