Professor Walter Busuttil MBChB MPhil MRCGP FRCPsych (RAF Retd) is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Director of Research and Training at Combat Stress commencing this role in August 2020. He is a Visiting Professor to the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neurosciences (IoPPN) working collaboratively at the Kings Centre for Military Health Research. In 2007 he was appointed Director of Medical Services at Combat Stress. He led the transformation of Combat Stress into a world leading clinical service setting up cutting edge clinical programmes for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In 2014 he set up a Research Department which works closely with the Kings Centre for Military Health Research (KCMHR). Walter served for 16 years in the Royal Air Force retiring in 1997 at the rank of Wing Commander. He initially qualified as a General Practitioner serving as a General Duties Medical Officer on fast-jet air bases as well as taking part in operational deployments. He then trained in the RAF as a psychiatrist qualifying as a consultant in 1994. He was instrumental in the setting up of PTSD mental health rehabilitation programmes designed for service personnel returning from the first Gulf War. He was also part of the clinical team that rehabilitated the released British Beirut Hostages. Between 1997 and 2007 he worked setting up tertiary services for sufferers of Complex PTSD in civilian mental health services in general adult and medium secure forensic settings. After he was appointed as Director of Medical Services at Combat Stress in 2007 Walter led the setting up of residential, community and outreach clinical services nationally expanding the clinical capability of Combat Stress as well as campaigning for and encouraging statutory NHS services to be set up for Veterans’ mental health. In 2011 his DoH funding application to provide a six week intensive PTSD rehabilitation programme was successfully approved by the National Specialized Commissioning Team. This programme has been running across the U.K. since September 2011. Prof Busuttil has published extensively and has lectured nationally and internationally about treatment and rehabilitation of military personnel, veterans, military families and survivors of traumatic stress suffering from chronic and complex presentations of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He is past Chair of the UK Trauma Group which he held for five years before handing this over in 2013 and was a founder board member of the UK Psychological Trauma Society from 2008 handing this over in 2013.
