I am a senior Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist expertise in cataract surgery and medical retina conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. I perform around 600 cataracts a year. I lead the medical retina service at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. I am an internationally recognised expert in this field. I am a member of the Vision Academy, an international group of experts from around the world, who develop guidelines of care and am a member of Oxford Congress Council. I have been a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist's Council and Scientific Committee for 6 years, stepping down at the end of my term in 20I8. I have attended Advisory boards for Bayer, Novartis, Allergan and Alimera Science. At the Royal Victoria Infirmary I and my team operate on about 16 cataracts a week. At the Nuffield Health Hospital I use standard, toric and multifocal intraocular lenses if required. As the thought of cataract surgery can be stressful I also have an anaesthetist with me who can offer some calming medicine if desired. My Private consultations are usually at the Nuffield where I have use of an OCT to accurately image the retina in addition to the full range of ophthalmic equipment expected. Additional imaging can be organised at the Royal Victoria Infirmary if needed. I am actively involved in clinical trials of potential new treatments and ways of managing conditions, currently on diabetic maculopathy, retinal vein occlusions, central serous retinopathy and macular degeneration.
