Dr Ranjit Mahanta is an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in old age psychiatry. He has been a visiting consultant at Priory Hospital Ticehurst House since 2021, in addition to his post in the NHS in Surrey, where he has been since 2011. Dr Mahanta currently leads an inpatient unit for severe functional and organic mental illness for patients aged 65 years and above, and has had other leadership roles previously in the NHS such as membership of the NHS Clinical Senate. He is also the current Guardian of Safe Working Hours.Dr Mahanta completed his medical training at St Bartholomews & The Royal London Medical School in 2003 and went on to specialise in old age psychiatry at London teaching hospitals. After completing his core training, he became a qualified member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in 2008.During Dr Mahantas higher specialist training in London, he completed a Masters in Neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London with distinction. He then went on to complete a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and enrolled on the GMC specialist register as a specialist in Old Age Psychiatry. Furthermore, he was involved in various research projects during his postgraduate training, including work as first author at the world-renowned Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, investigating glaucoma treatments in dementia. Dr Mahanta remains committed to research in his NHS work and has a particular clinical interest in the mental health of Parkinsons disease.
