Dr Sarkar is a dual trained (General Adult and Forensic) psychiatrist with speciality certification in both UK and USA. Having worked in the USA for a year as attending psychiatrist at the Court Evaluation Unit of Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (formerly known as Worcester State Hospital) and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School he came back to UK to join a large private psychiatric group as Medical Director to lead one of its ailing hospital. Once the hospital became stable, he moved on from it. After another unfulfilling year in the Private sector, coupled with working for Mental Health Tribunals, he returned to NHS England but after a very brief period he decided to leave NHS and work for the Military. He has worked in various military facilities since August 2016. In 2019 he was appointed Associate Dean (Psychiatry) at the Defence Medical Academy and heads the psychiatry training program for British Military. He trained in forensic psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, London and the University of Massachusetts. In addition, he studied Law at Harvard University and at Northumbria University. Besides psychoanalytic psychotherapy, he has a long-standing interest in law and ethics. He served on the Ethics Committee of American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Formerly as an associate of the General Medical Council (GMC) he sat on the Investigation Committee (IC),Fitness to Practise panel (FTP), and Registration Panel (RP) before relinquishing his post after moving to USA. Since his return to UK, he has worked as Health Examiner and Medical Supervisor with the GMC's Fitness to Practise Directorate. Dr Sarkar has published widely on psychiatric ethics in general and his special interest lies in the legal and ethical aspects of confidentiality. He has written for both an American audience (through the 'Journal of American Academy of Psychiatry & Law') and British audience (through the various journals of the Royal College). His private practice is limited to selected medico-legal work only in the field of Family Courts.
