Safwan Abdulrahman Taha graduated from Basrah College of Medicine, IRAQ, on 1983 with honors and became Professor of Surgery, with distinction, on 2000 and then founding Dean of Thi-Qar College of medicine, URAQ, in 2003. He holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Glasgow, Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons, Specialization Diploma in laparoscopic Surgery from Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg; France and the Certificate of the Arab Board of Surgery. Prof. Taha was the first surgeon to win the prestigious “Travelling Fellowship Award” of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) twice on 2006 and 2007 and was a founding member of the Emirates Obesity Surgery Interest Group, currently the Emirates Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ESMBS). Prof. Taha is currently Governor of the UAE Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Governor at large and member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, Member of the International Relations Committee of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), International Federation for Surgeons of Obesity (IFSO), Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA) and SAGES. Prof. Taha is recognized as “Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery” and “Surgeon of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery” by the Surgical Review Corporation; USA. He is an international speaker, has more than 37 published papers and serves as “Reviewer” for “Obesity Surgery”, the Official Journal of IFSO. Prof. Taha is the Director and Lead Surgeon of the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center at Mediclinic Airport Road Hospital.
