Clinical Associate Professor at Exeter Medical School. I was conferred into the Membership of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, British order of knighthood to reward outstanding achievement/service in 2018. I was awarded the Royal College of Psychiatrists Fellowship in 2016. I am the winner of the RCPsych team of the year (ID) 2021, ILAE Epileptic Disorders Epilepsy Education Award 2018, national BMJ awards 2020 (mental health) 2019 (Education), 2016 (Neurology), HSJ National Patient Safety Awards 2016 in 2 categories (mental health & training/education), NIHR commercial researcher award 2016, Business Health award 2016, Epilepsy Foundation America SUDEP Challenge Award 2016, ILAE UK expert led poster award 2015 & ‘Highly commended’ in the BMJ awards –innovations 2017. I was a finalist in the HSJ awards 2012- 2015, RCPsych Public Educator of the year Award 2013 & the BMJ awards (mental health) 2012, 2017 & 2018. I was the recipient of the BMA ‘highly commended’ book award 2011 & 2017. I have run monthly BBC mental health phone ins for the last 9 years following a public health Beddoes Fellowship. I have over 200 publications in peer reviewed indexed journals. My research focus is SUDEP & impact of ID in PWE. I set up the NIHR adopted UK ID AED research register. I created the SUDEP & seizure safety checklist (https://www.sudep.org/checklist) & helped release EpSMon (https://www.sudep.org/epilepsy-self-monitor &www.epsmon.com) which has positive Cochrane reviews & NHIR systemic technological appraisal, is the world’s first evidence based mobile application to monitor epilepsy risk. The checklist & app are part of the UK national epilepsy commissioning toolkit. Other recent innovations include the Purple Book & the ‘do not flush your life away’ public mental health campaign.
