Description

I am an experienced manager of AMHP services, but often return to front line AMHP practice for significant periods. As someone who has been detained under the MHA a number of times the quality of AMHP practice is of pre-eminent importance to me. I am also an experienced trainer of AMHPs, social workers and other staff, particularly in these areas: (1) how to avoid the detention of people diagnosed with 'personality disorder' and related contested diagnoses; (2) suicide risk: coping with suicidality and the possibility of completed suicide; (3) principles and techniques of AMHP triage and 'considering the patients case' under s13(1) MHA: the 'new' school of bolder sAMHP decisions at the point of triage; (4) hoarding and serious self-neglect: working with personality and other long-term factors. I am the author of the following articles on the Critical AMHP Blog: https://www.the-critical-amhp.com/ "AMHP Number Two Please..." : an analysis of the dysfunctionality of AMHP services; "AMHPersonality: Disordered?" : an analysis of the problems in assessing those labelled with 'personality disorder'; "An AMHP's Journey Through s13(1)": "I am an agent of social control: the bailiff of mental health services. I walk past your Skoda, your sofa, and your speakers. I take you away instead". I am associated with Matt Simpson of Bournemouth University, and Robert Lewis, Co-chair of the AMHP Leads Network, amongst others, in the development of the 'new' school of s13(1) MHA: the taking of many bolder AMHP decisions without doctors at the point of referral. I am also associated with Rob Manchester of Devon AMHP service, Open Dialogue trainers Yasmin Ishaq and Horatio Clare, and others, in the development of the Dialogical MHA assessment: https://www.the-critical-amhp.com/blog/blog-post-two-x437a. Experienced in all aspects of the line management and supervision of AMHPs and AMHP services, including appraisal and performance management, recruitment and retention, team development, managing change, absence and occupational health, promotion of innovative recording and communication systems. Have practised virtually continuously as an AMHP since 2000, and have a high level of expertise in every aspect of AMHP practice, as well as extensive knowledge of all relevant law and policy. Regularly consulted on complex legal and practice issues by staff across England and Wales, and through the AMHP Leads Network.
