Professor Ahmed Hankir is Honorary Visiting Professor at School of Medicine, Cardiff University (UK), Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Western University (Canada) and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research in Association with Cambridge University (UK). Professor Hankir's research interests include global and Muslim mental health and pioneering and evaluating innovative interventions that reject mental health related stigma and Islamophobia and he has published widely in these areas. Professor Hankir has co-edited four textbooks on religion and psychiatry (published by Springer) with Senior Members of the American Psychiatric Association. Professor Hankir has been consulted by the World Health Organisation for his expertise on the mental health and human rights of persons living with a mental health condition. Professor Hankir was also consulted by the New Zealand Government for his expertise on the psychological consequences of the Christchurch Mosque terror attacks. Professor Hankir is an internationally renowned public speaker and he serves as Public Engagement and Education Lead of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights, Institute of Mental Health, Nottingham University. His high energy and compassionate talks have been described as inspirational and ‘the best talk I ever attended’ by audiences worldwide. Professor Hankir has lectured at some of the most prestigious universities in the world including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Dartmouth, McGill, Toronto, Cambridge, Oxford, Padua and Coimbra Universities. Professor Hankir pioneered the Wounded Healer, an innovative anti stigma programme that blends the power of the performing arts and storytelling with psychiatry. Professor Hankir has been fortunate to deliver the Wounded Healer to over 150,000 people in 25 countries in five continents worldwide. Professor Hankir is the recipient of the 2022 World Health Organization Director-General Award for Global Health which was personally presented to him by Dr Tedros at the WHO World Health Assembly in Geneva.
