I am a Consultant Old Age & Liaison Psychiatrist. I have been a consultant for 5 years and am on the GMC Specialist Register and a Member of The Royal College of Psychiatrists. My main expertise is the interface of physical healthcare and mental health care, particularly the management of delirium and dementia. There is divide in service provision of mental and physical healthcare and patients with both problems often fall between the gap. I have leadership experience in service development, innovation and medical education. I enjoy supervising and teaching students and healthcare professionals about mental health care so patients in all health and social care settings receive optimal mental health care. I have advocated at a strategic level for best practice and improved care for patients with co-morbid mental and physical problems. Enhanced liaison services, such as RAID, have been shown to lead to better outcomes for patients, particularly older adults with dementia including reduced morbidity, reduced length of stay and savings to resources that could be reinvested in better services. Recently, I have learnt just as much about healthcare as a patient than a doctor, having stayed in ICU 3 times having delirium, bipolar disorder and PTSD. I am currently writing a book about my experiences of healthcare as a doctor-patient. I found that genuine compassion from staff was the most important common factor in keeping my morale alive, and I hope that my account will expand on this along with my suggestions for service improvements.
