Whilst completing my Law undergraduate degree and Officer training in the Army Reserves, I was involved in a traffic/motor incident and had to have my right arm amputated above the elbow. Becoming disabled wasn’t on my agenda, but I adapted to the changes, and now I work with businesses and groups to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. As an experienced public speaker and law graduate, I’m more than comfortable addressing a room full of people, whether that’s a group of 5 or 5,000. I have given talks on a wide range of topics surrounding disability, such as the importance of diversity in the workplace, getting comfortable talking about disability, visible and invisible disabilities (covering neurodiversity and mental health issues as well as physical disabilities), the realities of living with a disability, and an hour-long live broadcast on disabilities and resilience, with Paralympic Rower Ben Pritchard. Sharing my lived experiences, academic theories and works, and effective actions within the workplace allows me to create engaging sessions for all who attend. I have eight years of experience working in the finance sector, previously at Lloyds Banking Group, and Schroder’s Personal Wealth. At SPW, I was part of the steering group that ran the inclusion and diversity group DAN (Disability Awareness Network). Building on this experience, I have now moved on to a role that I am very passionate about with PurpleSpace. Who are the world’s only networking and professional development hub for disabled employees, network and resource group leaders and allies from all sectors and trades. As a keen sportsman, I captain the Castleford Tigers Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) team, and I am part of the England Lions PDRL squad, which won the inaugural PDRL World Cup in 2022. I am also a qualified rugby league coach and qualified as a personal fitness instructor whilst in the Army Reserves. I am a mentor for the amputee charity Limb Power, supporting their aim to help adults and young people with disabilities get (back) into sport. I’m also a volunteer visitor for the Limbless Association, supporting new and soon-to-be amputees through the transition. I regularly take on group and individual fundraising challenges, including my solo 350km+ charity bike ride in 2021, from Castleford’s The Jungle stadium all the way to Wembley, raising money for all teams in the PDRL league.
