I believe that ‘Art’ can be used to facilitate a greater understanding of the Self, enabling reflection and understanding of our key motivators as well as promoting wellbeing. My paintings reflect my own ‘mythic’ narrative and work with the concepts of Fragmentation and Cohesion and how we construct ‘mythic realities’ in order to create ‘narrative cohesion’. By understanding ‘mythic reality’ and through deconstructing and questioning reality, we can gain insight into how we view the world and our place within it. My background, in English Literature, Art and Anthropology has helped me gain critical insight into how Art functions within society. Art and its perception, changes from culture to culture. In western culture Art is often viewed as a ‘commodity’ which can be alienating and can remove the beneficial aspects of Art as Therapy. I believe Art is firmly embedded within the social context and that Art, its ‘ownership’, creation and appreciation should be widely available to all. I am becoming increasingly interested in social media and technology as a means of democratising Art. On another level, that as Art as Therapy, I am passionate about working in the Mental Health field by helping individuals in the process of self-healing and discovery. By encouraging Art as a therapeutic tool, Art can give individuals, who feel disempowered a ‘voice’ as well as a mode of analysis in a safe environment. I am committed to the combined use of meditation, creativity and reflection through Art Therapy as a positive, pharmaceutically free method of engendering a path to recovery. In this way Art can be used to encourage new ways of coping with situations and change behaviours that potentially lead to negative and self-destructive means of resolution.
