I am a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. After a long period of limited clinical work in hepatology while doing a PhD in biochemistry (in South Africa) I decided to study psychiatry in the UK - starting in June 2000. I passed my MRCPsych Exams in 2004 and trained as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. My initial role was as a general child and adolescent psychiatrist working within a tier 3 out-patients. In 2010 I started working in a "virtual" eating disorders team - at this point we had no specialist service for young people with eating disorders. In 2012 I was offered a part time job a Newbridge House Eating disorders Unit (alongside my part-time NHS job) where I worked - very happily until 2015 when my NHS workload increased significantly. From 2015 I was involved in helping set up a specialist community eating disorders service. In 2018, we set up the first (and currently only) in-patient NHS eating disorders service in the East Midlands. I was on the RCPsych Faculty of Eating Disorders (FED) Executive Committee from 2013-2017. I was a mentor on HEE National training for eating disorders in 2017/2018. I have been the eating disorders representative for the RCPsych Sport Pyschiatry Special Interest Group (SEPSIG) and in July I will start a role as finance officer/deputy chair for this group. My interests include ASD and eating disorders and we are working on an autism-friendly pathway for this patient group on our unit. I am also interested in compulsive over-exercise, athletes with eating disorders and I am interested in athlete mental health. I am hoping in future to look at safe exercise interventions for our young people with an eating disorder helping them learn how to develop a healthy relationship with exercise. I enjoy teaching and training and have taken on mentoring within our Psychstart program where we encourage medical students to choose psychiatry. I was lucky to experience working with Jane Morris on an Eating disorder Faculty project called New to eating disorders which has just been published. I am also a chapter co-author on an exciting book "Case Studies in Sport Psychiatry". I have recently enrolled on a certificate course with the ISSP (International Society for Sport Psychiatry.
