Dr. Kelly Henchel has been a part of the Carilion Virginia Tech Pediatric Residency program since its inception in 2012. She has been an advisor, preceptor, travel and CME conference companion, and QI participant with a poster presented at the AAP national convention. In July 2020, she began a new chapter as the Program Director. She feels uniquely qualified for this role due to her clinical time being primarily at the Jefferson Plaza Pediatric Medicine office (home to the resident continuity clinic) with a second job of weekend hospitalist. Her clinical roles are intimately tied to the residents as their office also is home to a first year and second year rotation. Prior to joining the faculty at Virginia Tech Carilion, Dr. Henchel practiced traditional pediatrics as a partner in a rural community in Eastern North Carolina. She joined this practice straight out of medical school and residency in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Henchel grew up just outside of Lansing, Michigan and is an avid Michigan State Fan. Dr. Henchel also enjoy hiking, kayaking, mountain biking and almost all other outdoor activities.
