Description

What made me want to be an Occupational Therapist? As a caring and compassionate individual, I have always wanted to work in healthcare. I have always wanted to make a positive impact on an individual's life. I initially found my passion whilst studying a degree in Health and Social Studies. This degree combines elements of sociology, biology, nutrition, law, and ethics which broadened my knowledge and had an influential decision on my pathway in life. During my time studying Health and Social Studies, I was given the opportunity to complete work placement in any healthcare setting that we chose. I spent a lot of time researching different professions. I knew I enjoyed the degree but something was missing... I wanted a profession that focused on an individual holistically putting client-centredness at the forefront. Occupational Therapy focuses on ABILITY rather than DISability and the goal of an OT is to eliminate and identify any barriers to independence and participation in meaningful occupations. I wanted to mature and increase my skills as an individual in healthcare therefore I decided to work full-time as a Healthcare Assistant before returning to University to pursue my carer as an Occupational Therapist. During my time as an HCA, I completed several FETAC courses which I was rewarded distinctions in each module. As the years passed, the drive and my enthusiasm increased. I was very proud to be accepted to Coventry University to study Occupational Therapy in 2015 and I graduated in 2018. Currently, I have experience both in physical and mental health, previously working as an OT in a low secure rehabilitation and a high secure acute unit. I then decided to increase my knowledge and experience by working within a Medical Rehabilitation and Frailty Unit for Chelsea and Westminster Trust in Physical. Being honest, this has been such a challenging and rewarding period within my career. My drive has enabled me to partake in numerous training opportunities and continuous development. Being a competent, hard working and resilient OT has helped me to move from a Band 5 to Band 6 OT within a year in which I am very proud of. My hope for the future is to progress and complete my MSc and to eventually become a Paediatric OT specialising in Learning Disabilities.
