After studying medicine in the Basque Country’s medical school I moved to the UK to specialised in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I concluded a PhD at the University of Leicester and a Masters degree in Sheffield Hallam University in the area of sexual health and psychotherapy. I trained as a systemic therapist at the Birkbeck University of London and a Post graduate degree in adolescent mental health at the Tavistock centre in London. During this year I worked at the Gender Identity Development Service. Once I concluded my training as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the Midlands, I become a consultant in Adolescent psychiatry at the adolescent unit in Nottingham. I moved from Nottingham to Leicester where I become a consultant in eating disorders working with young people. I worked at the Midlands Regional Unit. During my work in Leicester, I started my collaboration with Loughborough University Centre for Research into Eating Disorders (LUCRED) where I become a Visiting Professor at Lougborough University. My academic work focussed on the prevention of mental health problems of vulnerable populations, which included eating disorders in Sport. I worked closely with a number of Sport organisations and become a close collaborator of the Royal Ballet in London where I developed policies. I was invited to move back to Nottingham to work at the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health in 2014 as a clinician and as head of research of the national centre. I become a full Professor in Mental Health and Transgender Health in 2016 at the University of Nottingham. I have worked as a Clinical Academic in the field of mental health, gender and sexuality for over 20 years. I have over 125 publications and an extensive experience in teaching, research supervision and research Grant applications and management. I have obtained over £2 million in Research Grants and supervised many PhD students. I have been part of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) reviewing Grant applications. I have worked with national and international organisations in policy and guidelines development related to eating disorders, sport and LGBTQ+ health. Including England Rugby and World Athletics. For the last years I have worked closely with charities that are passionate about human rights and LGBTQ+ rights, like the World Professional Assocation for Transgender Health (WPATH), Mermaids and Gendered Intelligence. I am the co-chair of the 8th edition of the Global guidelines in trans health, Standards of Care, developed by WPATH.
