Dr Etherington is an experienced consultant, specialising in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Medicine, with a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine and considerable experience in the management of sports and musculoskeletal injuries - including the use of exercise-based rehabilitation. He was the Director of Defence Rehabilitation for the UK Armed Forces for 10 years and was responsible for the planning and delivery of all forms of rehabilitation for the Services including musculoskeletal, neurological and trauma rehabilitation. He was Defence Consultant Advisor for rheumatology, rehabilitation and Sport and Exercise Medicine. He developed the complex trauma rehabilitation service for the battle casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan, which achieved a world class reputation. He was National Clinical Director Rehabilitation for NHS England for 3 years and worked on the programme which developed the Regional Trauma Networks. He is the President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK and was awarded the CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018.
