Dr Powrie is a leading consultant with over 35 years experience as a specialist in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The majority of this time was spent as a consultant at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals in London where he was head of the large, internationally renowned, Diabetes and Endocrine service for over 17 years. This unit is one of the largest and most specialised centres in the UK and receives many complex referrals from all over the UK and internationally. Dr Powrie now practices mainly at London Bridge Hospital where he uses his depth of experience and expertise to provide a high quality specialised service. His outpatient clinics occur mainly in the Shard where HCA has state of the art facilities for delivering such a service. Dr Powrie is part of a particularly highly qualified thyroid team at where there is comprehensive multi-disciplinary expertise in treating all aspects of thyroid disorders including thyroid surgery, ultrasound and fine needle aspiration, nuclear medicine scans, CT and MRI scans, radio-iodine treatment and blood testing. Dr Powrie's undergraduate training was at the University of Aberdeen and following post-graduate medical training moved to St Thomas’ Hospital to complete his specialist training and a Doctorate which was awarded in 1996. He was also awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of both London and Edinburgh, both in the year 2000. Dr Powrie is widely published and is an honorary senior lecturer with King's College London. He has written over 40 peer reviewed articles in specialist scientific journals. He is a member of many learned societies including the Society for Endocrinology (UK), The Endocrine Society (US) and Diabetes UK. He is a reviewer for several national and international publications and is involved in all forms of teaching from medical students through to international specialist courses. He also has considerable experience in providing medicolegal reports and giving expert evidence in court.
