Description

I have worked for many years across a range of sectors advocating for disabled and older people, adopting a person-centred approach to advising on the design of accessible and inclusive built environments, predominantly housing (general needs and specialist) and neighbourhoods from pre-planning through to post occupancy evaluation. Roles have included working with disabled people to assess housing need, empty property assessment and lettings, having also worked on the Mayor of London's Accessible Housing Register. In 2011 I completed an MSc in Accessibility and Inclusive Design (Distinction) where my dissertation considered Resident Post Occupancy Evaluation of new build wheelchair accessible housing, latterly co-authoring Habinteg's 3rd Edition Wheelchair Housing Design Guide and continuing to author Accessible and Inclusive Housing Design Site Briefs for Wandsworth. I am a member of the Access Association and the Royal College of Occupational Therapist Specialist Section in Housing (RCOTSS-Housing)'s Co-opted Lead on Access and Inclusive Design, receiving the Elma Shearer Award for Excellence in O.T(Housing), the OT Show's 'Outstanding Senior Occupational Therapist'. My role with RCOTSS-Housing has included sitting on the Access Group of the English Government's Technical Housing Standards Review (publication of 2015 Part M), presenting at an Ageing in Place conference in Hong Kong on the history of UK Housing Design, responding to consultations including the DCLG Inquiry into Housing for Older People in 2017 which led to my giving evidence in the Houses of Parliament. I am also a member of BSi B/559 committee responsible for BS8300: 2018 'Design of an Inclusive and Accessible Built Environment. In addition to working as a Housing OT, I work in a variety of roles to further develop my knowledge of the design and provision of accessible and inclusive environments. My work with Motionspot covered a range of building types including offices and hotels, including a project which won the House of Lords international Bespoke Accessible Hotel competition. Through my work with the Centre of Accessible Environments I was also seconded to Habinteg to assist with the Equalities & Human Rights Commission Toolkit for Local Authorities published in 2018. I am currently advising on the Habinteg and Homefinder UK's Accessible Now project aiming to ensure wheelchair accessible properties are let appropriately (with the hope to update the London AH Categories in future) and work with AccessiblePRS on a range of projects across a variety of housing typologies.
