My practice is predominantly vascular with particular emphasis on aortic surgery, carotid endartectomy and peripheral bypass surgery. A large bulk of my work is made up of varicose vein surgery in particularly treatment of varicose veins including Endovenous Surgery such as Radiofrequency Ablation (VNUS). My general surgical practice comprises open and laparoscopic hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. My medical education was in London at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School Graduating in 1980. Following this I pursued a career as a surgeon in the Royal Air Force reaching the rank of Wing Commander and enjoying postings in Germany, Cyprus and Belize. My higher specialist training involved time as a senior registrar in NHS hospitals as well as service hospitals, and my vascular training was in Sheffield. I retired from the RAF in 1995 and took up a Consultant Surgeon post with North Durham Healthcare NHS Trust. I am now heavily involved in surgical training; I represented the trust on the Regional Specialist Training Committee for General Surgery for 10 years. Additionally I have been a senior examiner for the MRCS examination at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) both in the UK and abroad for many years and was appointed as the Convener of Examination at the College in November 2017 for a period of 3 years. This means I am responsible for organisation, standards and Quality Assuranceof all examining activity at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I have been elected as a Council Member at RCSEd. I was Lead Clinician in General Surgery for the County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust for 7 years. I sit on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Spire Washington Hospital.
