I qualified with honours in 1987 at the University of Milan, Italy. I began my training in General Surgery in Italy and in 1992 I was awarded with a Master of Surgery (MS) from the University of Parma. I moved to the UK in 1995 and in 1996 I became Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I specialized in Hepato-pancreato-biliary Surgery and Liver Transplant and since 1999 I have worked in several Centres of Excellence in the UK and abroad, including Nagoya University Hospital in Japan, well known for the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma. I am a Consultant Surgeon in the Liver Unit at the Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust in Hampstead, London and also Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London. During the last ten years I have performed more than 800 major complex surgical procedures on liver, pancreas and biliary tract, with a perioperative mortality lower than the national and international standard (< 2% for pancreas and <3% for liver). I have also performed more than 2000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies. The good outcome highlighted here is also the result of an integrated approach with anaesthetists, radiologists, gastroenterologists and highly selected nursing staff to provide the best and safest perioperative care.
