Dr. Woodson is a professor of otolaryngology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, IL., where she previously served as chair of the Division of Otolaryngology from 2005-2014. She has held leadership roles in several national medical organizations and government agencies, including presidencies at the American Laryngological Association and the Society of University Otolaryngologists, and her current chairmanship on the Food and Drug Administration’s Ear, Nose and Throat Devices Panel. She has lectured extensively around the world and has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and textbooks. Among her awards are two Distinguished Service Awards from the AAO-HNS and the Hans von Leden Award for Lifetime Achievement in Voice. Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Woodson is a graduate of Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine. She completed two years of general surgery training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, a residency in otolaryngology at Baylor, followed by a fellowship in laryngology at the Institute of Laryngology and Otology at the University College, London in England. Since the 1600s there has been at least one physician in every generation of Dr. Woodson’s family. She is married to K. Thomas Robbins, MD, and together they have three sons, one daughter and three grandchildren. Son, Gregory Robbins, MD, is continuing the family tradition.
