I’m Mark, an NHS Doctor and co-founder at Lumi. I grew up thinking I was unstoppable. I sailed through school, medical training and my early years as a doctor. But in 2022 that all changed. After a period of battling on my own, I sought help. I was depressed, anxious and burnt out. With a little bit of work, and a LOT of support, I started to improve. It may sound strange but I'm grateful for this. The experience opened my eyes. I started to see repeating patterns: 1. I struggled to open up to my own family 2. I couldn't help my patients access the support they need After opening up to my best friend, I learnt he saw the same patterns: 1. His family were struggling to access mental health support 2. He felt trapped by the system in supporting young people in children's homes With these realisations, Lumi was born. There is a family mental health crisis and the system is failing so many. Traditional methods are often: 1. Reactive 2. Inaccessible or Expensive 3. Too daunting/stigmatised for families to access Our mission is to redefine the approach to family mental health, ensuring every family can talk openly, understand and support each other. Lumi is an app that brings families together to help them find the right words and ways to support each other. I am supporting my work with Lumi through 'TheStraightTalkingDr' — a platform I created to support people to improve their mental health. My previous experience includes: • 5 years of medical practice including Community and Inpatient Mental Health, Accident & Emergency and General Practice • Developing a research paper into Long COVID Biomarkers • Leading The Royal Free London Long COVID service • Trustee of the Oddballs Foundation Charity • Multiple Public Speaking events across corporate and charity events • Training with The Coaching Academy to become a High Performance Coach
