Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj is the Founder and Medical Director of the Maharaj Institute and Stem Cell Cryobank. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Glasgow Medical School, Scotland and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and Hematology followed by specialist fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation at the University’s Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland. During the 1980’s he worked with Alan Burnett, M.D., Chairman of the United Kingdom Medical Research Council’s Acute Leukemia trials. They developed the first Scottish Bone Marrow/ Stem Cell Transplant Program at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland. They were one of the first transplant centers to publish their data on the use of autologous bone marrow transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia which is now a standard of care. Dr. Maharaj subsequently initiated and developed the Leukemia Unit at Darlington Memorial Hospital, Newcastle Regional Health Authority, England. He was then recruited to the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital/Sylvester Cancer Center and together with Dr John Byrnes they established the Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Program. Dr Maharaj continued his innovative clinical and translational research with the development of the Outpatient Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Center at Florida Medical Center. He was recruited to Bethesda Memorial Hospital, Boynton Beach, Florida where he established the Bethesda Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Center. In 2001, together with Dr Jacqueline Gouvea, he established the South Florida Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Institute achieving Joint Commission Accreditation, American Association of Blood Bank Accreditation and Registration with the United States Food and Drug Administration. The Institute has an International reputation. As an expert in stem cells, he is conducting innovative research regarding adult stem cell therapies and their impact on the immune system in the treatment of blood disorders, cancers and chronic diseases which are associated with aging of the immune system (immunosenescence). Dr. Maharaj has performed stem cell/bone marrow transplants for patients with blood disorders, leukemia, and other cancers such as lymphomas and multiple myeloma. These patients have achieved long term survival by the immune regeneration of their own adult stem cells. More recently, he has been advocating collecting and storing adult stem cells for future use as the number of approved uses of adult stem cells increases. He is also developing clinical protocols using the individual’s own immune system for the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiac diseases and neurodegenerative disorders such as strokes, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Maharaj is a member of many professional organizations such as the American Medical Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Maharaj is the author of more than 80 published research papers and abstracts on bone marrow and stem cell transplantation for blood disorders, cancers, Parkinson’s disease, and other inflammatory diseases. He has also developed a new protocol for Parkinson’s disease patients, for which he was awarded a United States Patent. Currently he is running two FDA approved Phase I/Phase II Clinical Trials for solid tumor cancers and fraility. Dr. Maharaj has conducted research as the Principal Investigator for organizations such as Immunex, Genentech, Amgen, Biomira, and Genzyme. He was profiled by Suzanne Somers for his work with stem cells in her book Bombshell: Explosive Medical Secrets that will Redefine Aging (2012), based upon the recommendations of Ray Kurzweil (Director of Engineering at Google), where Ms. Somers categorized him as “America’s Leading Expert on Stem Cell Technologies.” To educate the physician community on stem cells, Dr. Maharaj has established the Advanced Stem Cell Education Program (ASTEP).
