Busy, busy, busy described my working life as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Family and Systemic Psychotherapist from the early '90s. With a passion for service development and innovation, I have been involved in forming and shaping youth services both in the NHS and in 3rd-sector organisations over the years. A medical career, spanning 25 years within the NHS, included 14 years as a Consultant in Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) with expertise in addictions and the development of trauma-informed services for young people with substance use problems. As a reality check, a rare brain tumour and successful surgery in 2006, prompted a change of course towards a more liberated, innovative and positive lifestyle with greater balance between work and play. In 2005 I began training in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy approaches and since then have worked with many amazing horses and people. My experiences and relationships with horses keep me grounded and are a reminder to breathe and live in the moment. I was one of the founding Directors of Birribi in 2014, a therapeutic residential care organisation in West Wales. The development of the therapeutic programme for children in residential care at Birribi has presented an exciting opportunity to create an innovative therapeutic model, drawing upon the research evidence-base outside the UK and primarily in Scandinavia. We learned from a rich tradition of humanist, social pedagogy, group and relational based approaches. Interestingly, in a parallel process of learning, Youthinc Directors, Lisa and Deborah, expanded their knowledge and experience in work with horses - facilitating positive mental health, wellbeing and learning sessions and training. So, moving away from traditional clinical psychiatric practice has enabled a more creative development of systemic practice and Equine Assisted Therapy and Learning. As a Co-Director of Youthinc CIC, a Social Enterprise, we bring innovation in systemic practice through an effective multi-systemic approaches to working effectively with vulnerable youth – an approach that Youthinc CIC offers other 3rd-sector organisations through team training and consultation. So, I'm busy and I'm not looking for other jobs! I love my working life with a balance between Birribi in Pembrokeshire and developing equine assisted therapy and learning in Somerset. Watch this space for some writing, ideas to catalyse change, upstreamist action and innovation in health and social care which go beyond the medical model.
