Description

I am a Consultant General Surgeon and Master of Surgery of the University of Cambridge. I work full time for the National Health Service at University Hospital and the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton. I undertake independent surgical practice at the Spire Southampton Hospital. I also hold a national Clinical Excellence Award for my work for the NHS. I now specialise in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of breast cancer and other breast disorders, as a senior member of the Southampton Breast Multidisciplinary Team; I am also a member of the Association for Breast Surgery (ABS). I also specialise in the surgical treatment of thyroid and parathyroid diseases, as a member of the Southampton Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team. I am a member of the British Association for Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS), and contribute fully to the public BAETS national database of thyroid and parathyroid surgery. I also have a wide practical experience in the treatment of hernias and of skin and soft tissue lesions. My Clinical Apprenticeship I graduated in Medicine from Cambridge University and Kings College Hospital in 1981. I trained in all disciplines of General and Trauma Surgery in specialist surgical centres in London, Southampton and the South of England. I was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1985; I was awarded the Master of Surgery Degree of the University of Cambridge in 1991. I was awarded a Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992. I worked as a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Leicester from 1994 to 1999, I returned to Southampton in 1999 to take up my current post. In January 2018 I completed 42 years of service in the Territorial and Army Reserve, with operational experience in the Middle East and Afghanistan. For this work I was awarded the Queen's Volunteer Reserves Medal in Her Majesty's Birthday Honours List in 2015. From 2003 to 2009 I was the Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology. Since 2009 I have been the international Subject Chair for Medicine of the Content Advisory Board to SCOPUS. SCOPUS is the worldwide academic publishing information system which informs the UK's academic Research Excellence Framework programme. I was an Executive Director of the British Association for Surgical Oncology (BASO) from 2000-2002, and of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, from 2012 to 2016. My Research and Academic Work I have a busy academic research and development programme in clinical data visualisation and advanced audit systems at UHS. For this work, I have also been awarded: membership of the Strategic Advisory Team .
