Dr Amanda Thompsell is National Specialty Advisor: Older People's Mental Health at NHS E&I, the previous chair of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and member of advisory board to the Journal of Dementia Care and is a medical member for the first tier tribunal service. She is also a non-executive director of Target Healthcare REIT plc, the UK's first care home Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT). Dr Thompsell trained and originally practised as a GP before switching to working in old age hospital medicine, and then retraining in old age psychiatry. For many years she provided clinical leadership to the Care Homes Support Team working with care homes with nursing in Lambeth Lewisham and Southwark to improve the mental and physical well being of the residents and provide training and support to care staff. After a year running an old age psychiatry liaison service in an acute hospital and then a mental health care home intervention team for 6 months she is now responsible for a specialist care unit caring for elderly individuals with severe mental and often physical health needs. She was vice chair of the NICE Guideline development group looking at medicine management in care homes and Member of Quality standards committee for NICE on medicines management in care homes. She was member of London Dementia Strategic Clinical leadership group – leading on Improving quality of care across all settings and a Regional Old Age Representative for South East London for Royal College of Psychiatrists .She was clinical champion for the Dementia Work stream of the End of Life Programme of the Modernisation Initiative from January 2009-June 2011. . She has a special interest in the role of technology in dementia care ,end of life care especially Namaste care and oral health in dementia She continues to lecture at various national and international conferences and events and has published a number of articles, reports and chapters in books on the subjects of dementia care, medication, care homes, technology and end of life care.
