Description

Summary of Akil Taher's attainments (2010-2021): In April 2010, eight months after my triple bypass surgery, I ran my first half-marathon in Nashville, Tennessee.  In August 2010, a year after my open-heart surgery (@age 62), I journeyed to Mount Kailash in Tibet.  In October 2011, I ran my first full marathon, the Chicago Marathon and raised $ 11,000 for the American Heart Association. I am a 0.5 percenter. I joined the ranks of the 0.5 percent of the U.S. population who have run a full marathon.  In September 2012, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.  In April 2014, I ran the Boston Marathon to express support with the citizens of Boston, the injured participants, and the families of those who lost their lives during the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013.  In January 2016, I ran the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (now sponsored by the TATA Group) in India, considered to be Asia’s largest marathon in terms of participation and magnitude. I raised funds for PETA India, St. Jude India Childcare Centre, and Bombay Medical Aid Foundation. In November 2018, I finished a Century Bike Ride (100-mile ride).  In February-March 2021, my book will be published that chronicles my transformation from an open-heart surgery patient into a marathoning, mountaineering, triathloning, and century cycling athlete.  As an author and heart-healthy speaker, I stay focused on spreading the message of a heart-healthy lifestyle driven by personal experience as a recovered heart disease patient. As a resurgent physician, I leverage medical science and lifestyle medicine to treat the underlying cause of the disease and not just the consequence of the disease. And as a septuagenarian athlete and veganism proponent, I have benefited tremendously by adopting a plant-based diet and fostering a deeper connection with nature. For years, I have been an interactive speaker for several pharmaceutical companies in the US, including Pfizer, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical organizations. I have also spoken at varied events, including Rotary Club events. I spoke at the 11th Annual Go Red Event Speaking about Women’s Heart Disease at the Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Alabama. I have over twenty years of experience running and managing urgent care clinics in North Alabama including recruiting Doctors and Nurse Practitioners. If you want to avail heart-healthy tips, sign up for my forthcoming book, or invite me for a digital speaking session, please visit my website, connect with me on social media, or write to me.
